My favorite painting of the day

It's not modern, but it is American. This 1825 James Peale still life, in the Worcester Art Museum, shows Peale at his best: gorgeous fruit, a shade overripe (see the barely-too-brown edges of the grapes). It almost smells like late summer, but the composition's slight stiffness & formality keep it from becoming too lush. . . it maintains a colonial reserve, as one would expect from the Peale dynasty. (And if you want to put on your scholarly hat, see the Peale Family Papers at the NPG.)
