The Finnish-born architect would have turned 100 on Friday, and the National Parks Service held a party for him at the St. Louis Gateway Arch this weekend (lots of block-building, apparently). I'm a Saarinen fan mostly because his terrifically elegant work helped create the vogue for mid-century streamlining. But I also lived in a Saarinen building, Noyes House, at Vassar a shockingly long time ago. Good photos here and here.
Unfortunately, 1950s styling--even great 1950s styling--was out of fashion during my undergraduate years. But I'm glad I did coursework on a Tulip chair, and I lift a glass (Iittala Aarne, Finnish-designed circa 1949--thanks, J.) to Saarinen's good work. Happy birthday. (Props to Tyler Green for the reminder via Twitter. Image source)
